Making a dent through wikipedia edit-a-thons

Last weekend I participated in my second wikipedia edit-a-thon focused on improving the entries for African American artists. I linked up with The Black Lunch Table, a small grassroots entity focused on filling the holes in art history and encouraging conversation around race, gender and politics among artists of color and art workers who support artists of color.

I registered on their Wiki edit-a-thon meetup page, which is really easy. But editing a wikipedia page is challenging – especially for the neurotic research-driven academic. Plan plenty of time to work on an entry – I’m still working on one artist, 4 hours later! It helps to have all of your sources well-organized in PDF form so you can easily cite them, or set yourself up to work in an art library so you can grab books as you need.
